About the Unit

Introduction

The Staff Development and Training Unit is the central point for information about staff development opportunities at Flinders University. The Unit is funded jointly by the Human Resources Division and the Vice-Chancellor and so the majority of its activities are offered without charge to University staff.

Services

The services we offer to staff include:

Scheduled Courses

The Unit offers a very comprehensive range of courses, workshops and activities in the areas of

The types of activities range from hands-on computer courses, small group seminars and discussion groups to short courses and courses that run over a full year.

A program of events scheduled for the coming months is available on our calendar.
Additionally, you will receive regular notices from our e-mail listserv (see Profdev below) with information about coming events.

Courses Customised for Specific Groups

If workgroups or teams have a specific training need we will modify an existing course or tailor-design a course to meet the need. We will work with staff and workgroups on staff development issues. This could involve discussing development needs, training plans or training resource requirements. You can request a customised course online by completing the Customised Programs form.

Facilitation

Staff in the Unit are skilled in group facilitation and regularly assist groups with strategic planning meetings and structured discussions.

Consultations

If supervisors, team leaders and individual staff want to discuss staff development issues they can arrange a consultation with staff from the Unit.

Training Needs Analysis

A Training Needs Analysis is a structured method of identifying the performance gaps and areas where development and training is required. There are a number of approaches. The following articles provide useful strategies for identifying training needs.

We will work with workgroups and teams to identify training needs and propose training and development plans.

Funding Opportunities and Study Assistance for General Staff

In addition to the range of courses available through the Unit we offer a number of schemes to encourage general staff to undertake development opportunities.

Under the Study Assistance Scheme general staff can apply for up to six hours of paid leave to attend lectures. Staff may also apply to Audit Topics.

The Staff Development Foundations Bursaries provide funding for two staff to undertake the University's Foundation Course each year.

The General Staff Conference Scheme is a means by which general staff can apply for a contribution towards the cost of a conference or course provided outside of the university.

The Arthur Keain Staff Development Awards and the Study Tours Scheme provide an opportunity for general staff to obtain funding for a study tour relating to their professional duties.

The Staff Development and Training Unit is located in Room 326, Level 3, Information Science and Technology Building.
